Virtual Reality has been described as the new frontier of knowledge and learning. After many years of use within military, law enforcement and research contexts, the technology is now accessible to the average consumer due to the decline in cost. Virtual reality is an exciting new opportunity for teachers and students alike to explore new ways of learning and engagement.


Over the last several year’s classrooms around the world have started to prepare the next generation with tablets and learning programming from an early age. All signs point to virtual reality as the next step forward, where students engage with teachers and their fellow classmates in transformative experiences through a wide spectrum of interactive resources.

The major benefit to virtual reality is that it offers students a new way to learn through visual simulation and interaction – whether they are auditory, visual or kinaesthetic learners. Much of the early adoption of virtual reality based learning has centred on the hard sciences such as biology, anatomy, geology and astronomy. The curricular focus and opportunities for learning are notably enriched through interaction with dimensional objects, animals and environments.

In other areas of education, classes are using virtual reality tools to work together on constructing architectural models and recreations of historic or natural sites. Teachers are also utilising virtual reality technology to engage students in topics related to literature, history and economics by offering a deeply immersive sense of place and time.
